Gallaudet Since April 8, 1864 when U.S. President Abraham Lincoln signed a
federal charter establishing Gallaudet as the world’s first university
for the deaf and hard of hearing, Gallaudet has been at the forefront
of higher education for educated deaf and hard of hearing students
